Urban Golfing — Gameplay Basics and Rules
What is Urban Golfing?
The Overview: this is a *costumed* event, a “real” game of golf in an urban setting, and a bar jaunt par excellence! It is a 19+ event, as we will be frequenting bars as part of each round.
Prizes will be given, incl. for best costume, so start hitting up those thrift stores now for some silly, golf-y goodness! A small greens fee will apply (a paltry $3) so plan to bring cash for greens fee and drinks — and ID, just to be on the safe side.
You must also provide your own golf club. It can be a plastic, kid’s one; a cheap, bent one from a thrift store; or I suppose a fancy “real” one, though I really do not advise the latter (it’ll get scratched all to hell on that concrete!). Hell, you can use a shovel, a hockey stick, a baseball bat–get creative! Creativity *will* be rewarded….
As mentioned, this is a costumed event, so make your thrift/vintage store runs now! Expect argyle socks, plaid pants, and “smart” sport coats to be picked through early.
How is it played?
We set teams out about every 15 minutes on a first-come, first-serve basis. (See note below about Teams.) First, you play the round and try to score par. The round will end near a bar, in which you stop to have a drink. Each round consists of 1 or 2 holes to play and then the bar.
When the next team comes in the door, your team finishes up your drinks and sets off for the next hole. Your Team Captain is in charge of making sure you move along when the next team comes by. Don’t worry too much about missing out on social time; we’ll *all* be gathered at the Clubhouse after the final hole for the Awards Ceremony and After Party.
What do I need to bring?
You bring: club, your fine costumed self, cash for $3 greens fee and drinks, ID (esp. if you look younger than 19).
We provide: balls (soft ones, one per player) and your course map. And, of course, PRIZES! Everyone loves getting prizes!

Are there any rules I need to know?
Yes, actually. The Rules:
- Be nice to your bartenders!
- Don’t damage cars or pedestrians (or players!).
- Don’t do anything that would get the cops involved, etc.
- Be a Spectacle, not a Nuisance!
- Please eat prior to arrival at tee-off. Last tourney we had some major delays when players ordered food at the bars. If you’re really famished in mid-route, grab some street meat or a to-go slice. Don’t hold up the game! The Clubhouse location after the final round will have food available for post-game dining during the Awards Ceremony and After Party.
Aside from that, you can do what you need to do to make the game fun. Play off of walls or garbage bins, switch or steal team players, skip around on the map (if your team is too inebriated to find the course), etc.
Do I need to come with my own team or can I arrive solo/in smaller groups?
Teams will largely be made up on site at the tee-off location and likely about be 4 to 6 players each. You can show up solo or in groups of any size, so do not worry about not having a team beforehand. We’ll team ya up and get you going.
If you *do* want to create a team prior to arrival (and, say, wear coordinated outfits, etc.), please keep it to roughly 4-6 players in size.
Tee-off time will be about 3:00pm or so for the first team, with each following team going out 10-15 minutes after that.
